An important influence on the Local Plan is the Government's Regional Planning Guidance. The Regional Planning Guidance for the South East (RPG9) was issued by Government in March 2001 and reaffirms the Thames Gateway area (see Thames Gateway Kent), as a Government priority area for regeneration. The Gateway area covers a large part of Swale, including Sittingbourne and the whole of the Isle of Sheppey.
